Bilaspur, April 01: The High Court of Chhattisgarh has found Amit Jogi guilty in the 2003 Ramavatar Jaggi murder case and directed him to surrender before the authorities within three weeks. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Arvind Verma delivered the verdict on Thursday, overturning Jogi\u2019s previous acquittal following an extensive investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The high-profile case, which dates back to 4 June 2003, involves the killing of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ramavatar Jaggi in Raipur. While a special court had acquitted Jogi in 2007 citing insufficient evidence, the Supreme Court of India later directed a fresh consideration of the matter. The CBI\u2019s 11,000-page chargesheet and subsequent evidence formed the basis of the High Court’s conviction.
Satish Jaggi, the son of the deceased leader, expressed satisfaction with the judgment, describing it as a hard-fought victory for justice. He stated that his family had endured 23 years of pressure and fear while battling an influential political entity. Satish also credited the CBI and the then Raman Singh-led government for ensuring a fair probe into the political conspiracy that led to his father\u2019s death.
Amit Jogi has termed the decision “unexpected ,” claiming he was denied a fair opportunity to present his defence. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Jogi Congress leader alleged that the court allowed the CBI\u2019s appeal without a proper hearing. He confirmed his intention to challenge the High Court\u2019s order in the Supreme Court, maintaining that he has full faith in the judicial system.
Ramavatar Jaggi was a prominent businessman and the state treasurer of the NCP, closely associated with former Union Minister Vidya Charan Shukla. Out of the 31 original accused in the case, 28 had been convicted earlier, while two turned approvers.
