Bhanupratappur, May 05: Gram Sabhas in three tribal villages under Bhanupratappur Forest Division have passed resolutions calling for an economic boycott of families allegedly involved in religious conversions. Residents of Botechang, Bikramganj, and Junwani submitted a memorandum to district union officials on Tuesday, demanding an immediate halt to tendu leaf procurement from these families to curb further conversions.
The villagers alleged that members of the tribal community are being lured through inducements and faith-healing gatherings. Representatives of the Gram Sabha stated that such activities are impacting traditional customs and disturbing the social fabric of the region, posing a direct threat to long-standing cultural practices.
Citing constitutional provisions that empower Gram Sabhas, the delegation noted that the decision for social and economic exclusion was taken collectively. They clarified that individuals not adhering to customary tribal practices would be barred from community-based benefits and the local tendu leaf trade.
The memorandum further claimed that a portion of the income generated from tendu leaf sales is being diverted to fund external activities. Villagers expressed hope that restricting procurement would serve as a deterrent against the spread of conversions in the forest division.
A large number of villagers, including Rajesh Komra, Amar Singh Komra, Ankalu Komra, Haroon Darro, and Baisu Darro, were present during the submission of the memorandum. Forest department officials confirmed receipt of the document and stated that the matter is being reviewed.
