United Nations, idiculing the nearly two decade-long futile negotiations to reform the Security Council as \u201ctheatre of the absurd\u201d, India has called for a constructive approach that adopts a text to move the mired process forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the 17 years since the IGN format was initiated, it has been reduced to a theater of the absurd\u201d, India\u2019s Deputy Permanent Representative Yojna Patel said on Tuesday, referring to the Intergovernmental Negotiations on reforming the Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMember states are trapped in an endless cycle of statements and discussions that lead nowhere\u201d, she said at a General Assembly meeting on Council reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To bring credibility to the reform process, \u201cIndia reiterates its call for the early start of text-based negotiations with transparent milestones and timelines\u201d, Patel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She called for \u201cintrospection and soul searching\u201d to see why the reform has failed to make progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Are we willing to honestly work for achieving tangible progress, or are we condemned, like Sisyphus, to be trapped in this endless cycle till eternity?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patel said that India hopes the newly appointed IGN co-chairs would be able to move the discussions to concrete outcomes during the current session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assembly President Annalena Baerbock has appointed Permanent Representatives Tareq M. A. M. AlBanai of Kuwait and Lise Gregoire-van Haaren of the Netherlands as the co-chairs of the IGN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Progress at the IGN is blocked by a small group of countries that call themselves United for Consensus (UfC), which uses procedural maneuvers to block the adoption of a negotiating text that would outline the parameters of discussion and track progress, condemning the process to a Sisyphean fate, as Patel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The primary objective of the group led by Italy and comprising Pakistan is to prevent the addition of new permanent members to the Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere have been calls for patience and for building consensus, but consensus, when wielded as a veto by another name, becomes a tool of obstruction, not inclusion\u201d, Patel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said that the Council should add permanent members to correct the historical injustices built into its structure, especially for African countries, and not just non-permanent members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patel criticised proposals to allocate seats for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said that while India supports the representation of small island developing states in a reformed Council, \u201csimilar claims by other cross-regional groups such as OIC are not comparable\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFaith cannot become the determining criteria for Council entitlement\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India, Brazil, Germany, and Japan form the G4, a group that together lobbies for expanding the permanent membership of the Council and mutually support themselves for the seats in a reformed Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on behalf of the G4, Brazil\u2019s Permanent Representative Sergio Franca Danese said widespread assessment of the UN is that “it is ineffective and it faces major challenges\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, he said, \u201cReform is not an option, but an imperative\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must stop talking about talking and start negotiating\u201d, he said.
Air rifle mixed teams win gold and bronze at Deaflympics<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tokyo, Indian shooters sealed another double podium at the 25th Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo winning both the gold and bronze medals in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team event.
The pair of Dhanush Srikanth and Mahit Sandhu clinched the gold medal overcoming the South Korean pair Jeon Dain and Kim Woorim in the gold medal match while Mohammed Murtaza Vania and Komal Milind Waghmare added a bronze medal to their individual medals after getting the better of Ukrainian pair of Violeta Lykova and Oleksandr Kostyk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the gold medal match, Dhanush and Mahit raced to a 4-0 lead in beginning and maintained a clear gap with the Korean pair, eventually clinching the match 17-7. This is Dhanush\u2019s second gold meal of the Deaflympics while Mahit added a gold to her silver which she won in the individual event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bronze medal match was tighter, with the Ukrainian pair which included the women\u2019s individual gold medal winner Violeta Lykova. Both pairs were tied 4-4 after the end of the fourth series and at the end of the sixth series Ukraine were leading 7-5. Murtaza Vania and Komal then tied the scores at 7-7, 8-8 and 10-10 after four more rounds. The Indians then won two out of the next four rounds, with the points being shared in the other two. Eventually they secured the bronze medal winning 16-12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Indian shooters have won a total of nine medals across three days of competition. The Air Pistol Mixed Teams will be in action tomorrow as Indian will look to add more medals to their tally in shooting at the Deaflympics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
