New Delhi, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said that the Constitution of India is not merely a legislative document but the \u201cnational text\u201d that guides institutions and personal conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President was addressing the Constitution Day celebrations organised by the Supreme Court. Paying homage to the founding fathers who \u201ccrafted the largest written Constitution for the largest democracy in world history\u201d, President Murmu said the Constitution remains the source of India\u2019s unity, republican character, equality, and peaceful social, economic and political transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a matter of national pride that everyone, from the general public to experts, has become increasingly confident in our Constitution,\u201d she said, adding that the question \u2018What does the Constitution say on this subject?\u2019 has become the standard for determining the legitimacy of any action or system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President said that India\u2019s constitutional framers worked with an unwavering sense of \u201cnational interest\u201d, providing the country with a durable foundation for unity. She recalled that during the framing of the Constitution, there was \u201cdeep public engagement\u201d with the process, and 53,000 citizens attended the Constituent Assembly\u2019s sittings from the Visitors\u2019 Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Murmu said that thousands of suggestions were received from the public, and members from every region and social group participated in shaping the Constitution. Referring to Dr B.R. Ambedkar\u2019s role, the President said Constitution Day, officially adopted in 2015 to mark his 125th birth anniversary year, is a tribute to his \u201cextraordinary contribution\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also acknowledged the contributions of women members of the Assembly, including Dakshayani Velayudhan, who had emphasised that the Constitution must give people \u201ca new framework for living\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Murmu said that despite being a legislative document, the Constitution became \u201ca reference book for the people\u201d through public participation and widespread representation. She suggested the creation of a child-friendly version of the Constitution in various Indian languages so that future generations \u201ccontinue to feel connected\u201d to constitutional ideals from early childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA good personality can be formed when constitutional ideals and duties are assimilated at a stage when a child\u2019s life perspective is developing,\u201d she said. President Murmu stressed that the executive, legislature and judiciary must continue to strengthen the constitutional system \u201cthrough mutual coordination\u201d, adding that such harmonised functioning would accelerate India\u2019s progress towards becoming a developed nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President concluded her address by invoking the Supreme Court\u2019s motto “Yato Dharmastato Jaya\u1e25” saying that in a democracy, \u201cwhere constitutional values prevail, victory prevails\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
