Chhattisgarh govt clears ₹758-cr electricity bill relief for 29 lakh consumers

Raipur, March 12: Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Thursday launched the Mukhyamantri Bijli Bill Samadhan Yojana (MBBS) at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium, aiming to provide financial relief to over 29 lakh domestic and agricultural consumers. The scheme, which addresses pending dues accumulated during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, involves a massive waiver and rebate package totalling ₹758 crore.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister noted that the pandemic-induced lockdown prevented regular meter readings, leading to inflated, accumulated bills that many families found difficult to clear. “This settlement scheme has been designed to help consumers clear their outstanding dues in a convenient manner,” CM Sai said, adding that the initiative will remain effective until 30 June 2026.
The scheme specifically targets low-pressure domestic, BPL, and agricultural consumers, offering rebates on both the principal outstanding amount and the accumulated surcharges. Eligible beneficiaries can register for the scheme through local electricity distribution centres or the ‘Mor Bijli’ mobile application.
Once their arrears are settled under this scheme, consumers will become eligible for benefits under the M-Urja (Mukhyamantri Urja Shanti Jan Abhiyan), which provides a 50 per cent rebate on consumption up to 200 units for those whose total usage does not exceed 400 units.
During the event, CM Sai also distributed certificates to scheme beneficiaries and transferred a subsidy of ₹8.79 crore to 2,931 households under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Recognition was also accorded to a women’s self-help group serving as a vendor under the PM Solar House initiative.
Energy Secretary and Chairman of Chhattisgarh State Power Companies, Rohit Yadav, clarified that the MBBS scheme covers pending bills as of 31 March 2023. He urged consumers to complete their registrations by the June 30 deadline. Raipur North MLA Purandar Mishra and Raipur Mayor Meenal Choubey were also present at the launch, hailing the move as a significant step toward easing the financial burden on the state’s poor and farmers.
