Assembly passes three amendment bills on day four of winter session

Raipur, The Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed three amendment bills on the fourth day of its winter session. The legislation included the Chhattisgarh Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Amendment Bill, 2025; the Chhattisgarh Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) (Second) Bill, 2025; and the Chhattisgarh Private Universities (Establishment and Operation) Amendment Bill, 2025.
Minister for Industries, Labour and Excise Lakhanlal Dewangan had tabled the first two bills in the House on Tuesday. Under the Shops and Establishments Amendment Bill, the threshold for the Act’s applicability has been raised from establishments employing 10 workers to those employing 20 or more.
Key provisions of the amendment allow women employees to work night shifts between 9 pm and 6 am. It also extends the maximum daily working hours from nine to ten hours and increases the spread-over period from 10.5 hours to 12 hours.
BJP MLAs, including Anuj Sharma and others, participated in the discussion on the Shops and Establishments Amendment Bill. On the Jan Vishwas (Second) Amendment Bill, BJP MLAs Ajay Chandrakar, Neelkanth Tekam and Shakuntala Porte took part in the debate.
The Assembly also passed the Chhattisgarh Private Universities (Establishment and Operation) Amendment Bill, which paves the way for Columbia Profession University Raipur to become the 21st private university in the state. The institution is managed by the Janpragati Education Society, Raipur.
Higher Education Minister Tank Ram Verma had introduced the bill on Tuesday. BJP MLAs Ajay Chandrakar, Sushant Shukla and Uddheshwari Paikra participated in the discussion. Notably, Congress MLAs did not take part in the discussions on any of the three amendment bills.
