RAIPUR, May 11: Janjgir-Champa Collector Janmejay Mahobe has ordered a high-level investigation after a child died and three others fell ill following the consumption of watermelon in Dhurkot village. The Collector dispatched a health department team and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to the Janjgir District Hospital immediately after the incident was reported on Monday.

Under the Collector’s directions, the Janjgir SDM sent a medical team to the village to conduct health check-ups for all members of the affected family. The local Tehsildar has also been instructed to maintain constant vigil in the village to monitor the situation.

Civil Surgeon Dr S. Kujur stated that the children’s health deteriorated after consuming watermelon and chicken. While one child was declared dead before reaching the hospital, the three other children are currently undergoing treatment and their condition is reported to be stable.

Samples of the watermelon have been sent for laboratory testing on the Collector’s orders. A post-mortem examination of the deceased child has been conducted, and the viscera have been preserved to determine the exact cause of death.

The district administration is investigating the matter with utmost seriousness. Officials stated that necessary legal action will be initiated once the forensic and medical reports are received. Meanwhile, health teams remain stationed in the village to monitor other residents.
