Washington: US President Donald Trump has stated that he will block legislation by issuing sweeping vetoes if Democrats win control of Congress in the midterm elections, while acknowledging that constitutional term limits bar him from seeking a third term.

Speaking to New York Post columnist Miranda Devine on the “Pod Force One” podcast, Trump declared that a divided legislature would prompt him to adopt an aggressive obstruction strategy.

“I think we’re going to do great. But if we didn’t win, I veto everything. I’ll be vetoing, vetoing,” Trump said, adding that after a brief standoff, opposing lawmakers would eventually be forced to negotiate.

Addressing questions regarding his political future, Trump noted that the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution explicitly prevents a president from serving more than two terms. Trump, 80, won the presidency in 2016 and 2024.

“I’d love to run again if I had the chance, but the language is very exacting. I would love to,” he said. Pointing to his remaining tenure, Trump emphasized that significant policy objectives can still be achieved.

The US President also indicated readiness to issue preemptive pardons to former administration officials if a newly empowered Democratic Congress pursued investigations against them. Dismissing recent pre-election polls as unreliable, Trump maintained confidence in Republican prospects based on turnout at his rallies.

Under the US Constitution, Congress can override a presidential veto only by securing a two-thirds majority vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
